Terms of Use

Use Magpie thoughtfully.

These terms govern your use of the Magpie app, cloud service and SuperMagpie subscription. They are designed for an Australian receipt organiser—not a replacement for your original records or professional advice.

Effective and last updated 13 September 2026

The short version

1. Agreement and provider

Magpie is provided by Studio Duck (“we”, “us” or “our”). By downloading, accessing or using Magpie, you agree to these Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

For an app obtained through Apple’s App Store, these terms supplement Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (Standard EULA). Apple’s terms and any non-excludable law continue to apply. Apple is not responsible for providing Magpie support.

2. Licence

Subject to these terms and the applicable App Store usage rules, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to use Magpie on devices you own or control for lawful personal or business record organisation.

You do not acquire ownership of Magpie, its software, designs, trademarks or service content. Restrictions on copying, reverse engineering, redistribution and derivative works apply only to the extent permitted by law and open-source licence terms.

3. Accounts and security

You may need to sign in with Apple or a passkey to save and sync records. Provide accurate information, keep your device and credentials secure, and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access. You are responsible for activity under your account except to the extent caused by our breach of law or failure to exercise due care.

Do not share bearer tokens, attempt to access another account, or use another person’s receipts without authority. Passkeys may depend on Apple’s iCloud Keychain or another credential provider; availability and recovery are governed by that provider.

4. Your receipts and content

You retain ownership of receipt images, text, corrections and other material you provide. You give us a limited licence to host, copy, transmit, format and process that content only as needed to operate, secure and support Magpie as described in the Privacy Policy.

You represent that you have the right to provide the content and that doing so does not unlawfully disclose another person’s information. Do not upload illegal material, malware, or content unrelated to Magpie’s receipt-record purpose.

You can delete individual receipts and can delete your account in the app. Account deletion is permanent for Magpie’s copy and may not be recoverable.

5. OCR, AI and tax information

Always check the result. Scanning, optical character recognition, AI extraction, GST calculations, categories, summaries and exports can contain errors or omit information.

Magpie is a record-organisation tool. It does not provide tax, accounting, legal, financial or audit advice; determine whether an expense is deductible; establish compliance with ATO record-keeping rules; or lodge information with a tax authority. General labels or calculations are not recommendations tailored to you.

You are responsible for checking records against the original, deciding how they should be treated, retaining legally required evidence, and obtaining qualified professional advice where appropriate. Do not rely on Magpie as your only copy of important records.

6. SuperMagpie subscriptions

Where available, SuperMagpie is offered as monthly and annual auto-renewable subscriptions. The purchase screen shows the features included, current subscription period and price in your App Store storefront before you confirm. Features may include higher receipt limits, faster processing or other benefits described there.

We may change subscription features prospectively as Magpie evolves, but will not remove non-excludable rights or misrepresent the benefits shown at purchase. Material changes will be communicated where required.

7. Acceptable use

You must not:

We may investigate misuse and restrict access when reasonably necessary to protect users or the service.

8. Service availability and third parties

Magpie depends on your device, internet connection and third-party services including Apple, Cloudflare, Vercel, Meta and Brandfetch. Features can be delayed, interrupted or unavailable because of maintenance, outages, regional restrictions, provider changes or device capability.

We may update, repair, replace or discontinue features. Where a change materially affects a paid service, we will act consistently with applicable law and any commitments made at purchase.

Links and third-party services are governed by their own terms. We are not responsible for them except where the law provides otherwise.

9. Australian Consumer Law

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies a consumer guarantee, statutory right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified.

If Magpie has a major failure, you may be entitled to cancel the affected service and receive a refund for the unused portion or compensation for reduced value, and you may be entitled to compensation for other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. Other remedies may apply for a non-major failure.

For information about consumer rights, visit the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

10. Disclaimers and liability

Subject to the previous section and to the maximum extent permitted by law, Magpie is provided on an “as available” basis. We do not promise uninterrupted availability, perfect extraction, error-free categories, permanent storage, or that Magpie will meet every tax or record-keeping requirement.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your failure to check extracted data, retain original records, maintain reasonable backups or obtain appropriate professional advice. This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot lawfully be limited, or to loss caused by fraud, wilful misconduct or any other matter for which exclusion would be unlawful.

11. Suspension, termination and deletion

You may stop using Magpie at any time and may delete your account in the app. You must separately cancel any Apple subscription to stop future renewal.

We may suspend or terminate access for a serious or repeated breach, security threat, unlawful use, non-payment through Apple, or where necessary to comply with law. Where reasonable, we will provide notice and an opportunity to remedy the issue. Terms that by nature should continue—such as ownership, accrued payment obligations, lawful liability limits and dispute provisions—survive termination.

12. Changes, governing law and contact

We may update these terms as Magpie changes. The updated date will appear above, and material changes will receive additional notice where reasonably practicable or legally required. Continuing to use Magpie after new terms take effect means you accept them, except where law requires express consent.

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. You and Studio Duck submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria and courts hearing appeals from them. You may also have rights to bring a matter elsewhere under applicable consumer law.

If one provision is unenforceable, it is read down or severed to the minimum extent necessary without affecting the rest. A delay in enforcing a right is not a waiver. These terms, the Privacy Policy, the purchase terms shown by Apple and Apple’s applicable EULA form the agreement for Magpie.
